SUMMARY:Setting Boundaries in Mediation
DESCRIPTION:Setting Boundaries in Mediation\n\n\nEven though participant self-determination is at the core of our mediator principles\, setting boundaries during a mediation is a necessary consideration\, which may appear contradictory. This webinar will take a look at when it is appropriate and useful to set boundaries\, as well as best practices for doing so. We’ll also examine self-determination and neutrality to look at the gray areas of our best practices discussion. \n1 ADR CE credits awarded \n1 CLE credits applied for \nTrainer: Janet Collins \nNO CHARGE for active CRC volunteer mediators – If you do not know the Promo Code please contact Marianne\, Volunteer Coordinator at marianne@crcminnesota.org. This course is designed for all individuals wanting to learn to mediate for use at home\, in their communities\, and professionally for social workers\, attorneys\, psychologists\, and many other human-centered professions. \nDuring the training\, mediation students learn the mediation process and gain skills to help mediation participants have productive conversations and support their self-determination. Each module of CRC’s mediation course is infused with discussions of bias\, race\, and other cultural difficulties\, and students are challenged to be aware of their effects of joining participants’ conversation during this vulnerable time of conflict. Students learn to identify the interests and fundamental needs that underlie the positions of people in conflict and learn ways to listen effectively\, manage impasse\, and tend to the needs of all participants. Additionally\, participants learn skills to remain neutral in challenging situations and gain an understanding of ethical issues that may arise when mediating parties in conflict. \nParticipants will purchase The Mediator’s Handbook: Revised & Expanded Fourth Edition (look for the orange cover)\, by Jennifer E. Beer and Caroline C. Packard. It may be purchased when registering\, and it will be mailed to you with the course manual. You will receive the materials a few days before the first session of class. It is also available through on-line bookstores. \nCredentials: This 30-hour Civil Facilitative Mediator Training is certified to meet all requirements of both the Minnesota Supreme Court’s Rule 114 Training Guidelines and the Community Dispute Resolution Program Training Requirements for community mediators in Minnesota. Upon completion of this course\, participants will be eligible for inclusion on the Minnesota Rule 114 Qualified Neutral Civil Roster as well as be eligible to volunteer with community mediation centers throughout Minnesota. \nProfessional Credits: \n30 Alternative Dispute Resolution Credits (ADR) \n30 Continuing Legal Education Credits (CLEs): 25 Standard)\, 2 Ethics\, and 3 Elimination of Bias Credits \nCRC is a non-profit organization. SUMMARY:Neurodiversity in Mediation with Sierra Grandy
DESCRIPTION:Two-hour webinar on Neurodiversity in Mediation with Sierra Grandy\n\n\nIn this two-hour training\, we aim to raise your awareness of neurodiversity and provide language and context to neurodivergent experiences. Including discussions about the difference between “neurodiverse” and “neurodivergent\,” the Social Models of Disability vs. the Medical Model of Disability\, and a brief overview of some of the traits you may see in neurodivergent individuals. After we set you up with a common frame of reference\, we will shift to discussing how neurodivergencies within mediation participants may impact mediations and some accommodations that may be helpful. We also will have a discussion about neurodivergencies within mediators and how recruiting more people with neurodivergencies to become Qualified Neutrals can play a role in the ongoing diversity\, equity\, and inclusion discussions surrounding conflict resolution. This year we are adding in some scenarios to work on as a group to help with skillbuilding. \nSierra Grandy is a neurodivergent third-year law student at the University of Minnesota and is a law clerk at a local law firm. In addition to being in law school\, Sierra is a frequent public speaker on disability topics\, most of which focus on mental health or neurodiversity. Most recently\, she was on a panel of legal professionals for the February Federal Bar Association Luncheon “Out in the Open: Unseen Disability in the Legal Community.” \n2 ADR CE credits awarded \n2 CLE credits applied for \nNO CHARGE for active CRC volunteer mediators – If you do not know the Promo Code please contact Marianne at marianne@crcminnesota.org. SUMMARY:The Ripple effect: An Antiracist Journey
DESCRIPTION:In this 6-week guided discussion course\, we will examine our roles in and capacity for confronting racism.\n\n\nIt is expected that you participate in each discussion. (We skip the Friday before Memorial Day so the 6-session course takes place over a 7-week period). April 26\, May 3\, 10\, 17\, 31\, and June 7. \n8 ADR CEs awarded \nWe will examine our roles in and capacity for confronting racism in the alternative dispute resolution arena. We will explore the concept of neutrality with regard to intercultural conflict\, mediator bias awareness and power dynamics among identity characteristics\, consistent with Rule 114 Subd.4(a)(2). Each Friday\, from 7:30am-8:50am we will discuss the assigned readings\, video\, podcasts\, and journal prompts for an 80-minute session on Zoom. The topics and discussions are flexible based on the identities of the participants\, current events and where discussions lead each session. The curriculum for this journey draws from the work of Judith Katz on white awareness and Janet Helms’s stages of white identity development. Therefore\, the focus of exercises and discussion will fall predominantly on sharpening racial understanding from a white perspective. However\, the series is open to people of all races and open discussion is encouraged and facilitated by Jill Slipper Scholtz. \nYour full participation is expected. Discussions will build on each other and participants will engage with and learn from each other. The facilitated environment will be conducted as safe space for open\, curious and respectful dialogue. If you miss two discussions in a row\, it will be assumed that you have left the group and you will not receive a refund. This is in fairness to the group and the time that is invested in these sessions for productive growth as individuals and a cohort. \nWeek 1: Norms\, expectations\, understanding race\, white identity and white privilege\, colorblindness and stereotypes. \nWeek 2: Racial bias\, structural racism\, cognitive dissonance and white fragility and power dynamics related to identity and conflict resolution \nWeek 3: White supremacy\, more on cognitive dissonance and structural racism\, addressing guilt\, shame and perfectionism\, issue identification in mediation \nWeek 4: Listening skills\, sharpening your racial lens\, mediator bias self-awareness \nWeek 5: Embracing racial identity\, confronting racism\, multiple perspectives\, maintaining neutrality \nWeek 6: More on confronting racism\, building resiliency\, courage & persistence \n
